First Aid Training – The Importance of Keeping Up to Date

First aid training is an important part of public safety, and can often times be the difference in a life or death situation. Being properly trained to provide first aid treatment is a valuable skillset that enables you to offer the necessary assistance to somebody requiring medical attention, until they can be seen and cared for by a medical professional. First aid training not only provides people with the tools to treat basic medical scenarios, and even provide life saving support in an emergency, it also equips them with the knowledge of how to control a panicked situation, and how to properly reach out to emergency medical personnel when needed, all while staying calm, and providing reassurance to the patient.

Who Should Have First Aid Training

Specific job positions and career paths will require you to be trained in first aid and response, but it is a good idea for anyone, at almost any age to be properly trained in first aid treatment, to keep people better prepared for an emergency situation, or to provide assistance to somebody in need.

It is a good idea to even educate children on first aid treatments and practices, as they are capable of performing CPR and other important measures to keep others safe and healthy.

Although it is suggested that essentially everyone be trained in first aid, it is especially important if you work around children, or have them living in the home.

What First Aid Training Provides

Completing first aid treatment will provide people the education and skills to properly respond to an emergency situation, or to treat less serious injuries that occur in the home or workplace.

First aid is a wide topic, and individual courses and certifications will likely vary, but will definitely provide the basic, covering many topics that include:

  • How to properly assess a victim’s conditions
  • How to identify an emergency situation
  • How to remain calm and effectively deliver first aid
  • How to assist victims in a wide variety of scenarios, such as uncontrolled bleeding, head injuries, heart attacks, strokes and many other medical situations
  • How to treat minor injuries such as cuts, allergic reactions and other non life threatening conditions
  • How to perform potentially life saving CPR on adults and children
  • How to properly protect yourself from infection and injury while performing first aid techniques

The Importance of Updated First Aid Training

It is imperative to regularly update and refresh first aid skills to ensure you are capable of providing the assistance necessary in an emergency situation.

Participating in a refresher course is recommended every two years or so to give you an opportunity to practice the techniques you’ve already learned, as well as make you aware of any changes or updates to procedures and techniques within first aid training.

Keeping skills current means you are prepared to respond to an emergency, and will be able to efficiently assess and treat a victim until emergency personnel arrive on the scene, and also will ensure you are using the proper techniques to protect everyone’s safety and well being.

ILS went really well thank you. Just to give some feedback, Martin the course trainer was brilliant. I have been on ILS courses before and have found the trainers to be a little full on and not really understand care giving and emergencies outside of acute NHS Hospital trusts. Martin understood the skills (and resources available) of nursing staff working in primary care in independent sectors and the situations that they may face.
