This life support course (ILS) has been developed in order to standardise much of the in-hospital training undertaken already by Resuscitation Officers. Its aim is to train healthcare personnel in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual and/or AED), enabling them to manage patients in cardiac arrest until arrival of a cardiac arrest team and to participate as members of that team.

The Resuscitation Council (UK) life support course (ILS) was launched in 2007. It was developed in response to a demand from healthcare professionals who may have to act as first responders and treat patients in cardiac arrest until the arrival of a cardiac arrest team.

Each year, on average, 11,000 courses are held and 92,000 healthcare professionals are trained.

Who is this LIFE SUPPORT COURSE (ILS) suitable for?

The Life support course (ILS) is suitable for doctors, medical students, nurses, nursing students, midwives, healthcare providers such as physiotherapists, dentist and ambulance technicians. It may also be suitable for fire service technicians, police personnel and prison officers.

The life support course (ILS) teaches the knowledge and skills to:

•Recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach;

•Undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (manual and /or AED) and simple airway manoeuvres;

ILS went really well thank you. Just to give some feedback, Martin the course trainer was brilliant. I have been on ILS courses before and have found the trainers to be a little full on and not really understand care giving and emergencies outside of acute NHS Hospital trusts. Martin understood the skills (and resources available) of nursing staff working in primary care in independent sectors and the situations that they may face.
